STBB 871: General Midi

Thanks for the votes, means a lot.

Inspired by a recent Jonwayne video….

Watch for more details but General Midi tried to standardise the sounds for ‘default midi’ so I’ve created a sound font similar to the one that Jon discusses in the video (GM2).

TLDR: Can a beat be made in 2023 that sounds good from the General Midi 2 pack?

I’ve also sampled every patch to some .wav files, if you don’t want to install any other VST's into your DAW.

If you don’t use the .wav files then you will need something that can play .sf2 files - I have been using TX16Wx: https://www.tx16wx.com/download/

The .wav files all contain 4 sounds, C3, C2, C1 & C0 so you should have range to re-pitch and sample.

The drums allowed are also in the sample pack and mostly come from the CR80 to keep it the same era.

All effect are allowed and encouraged to flavour your stock sounds!

Nothing external allowed

Joa, I did try and think of something for the 5th birthday but struggled to find a ruleset that would work - and although its 5 years here there are a lot of people that have been competing a lot longer than that. Maybe someone can work something out for next week?

The Fine Print:

Upload your beat to Soundcloud, include "STBB 871“ in the title, and POST TO THIS FORUM by Thursday 06:00 in the morning, Pacific time/15:00 CET
Try to leave as much feedback as you can and you will receive it back.
For easy browsing's sake, you can also go to the STBB page: https://soundcloud.com/stbbcollection
Label entries that are posted after the deadline as 'late entry' and entries that don't comply with the rules as: 'non-entry' in your track title.
EVERYONE VOTES - by Friday noon Pacific / 21:00 CET
Winner: post new sample, rules, etc by Friday midnight Pacific/ Sat. 09:00 CET and upload the sample here: https://wetransfer.com/

thinking of solutions not to miss these things like the anniversary of the new forum, Nelson Mandela collab week.etc. again..

a friend came up with the idea of a calendar.. possibly automated..

i usually spend a good amount of time on forehand.. raising awareness and then making sure the winner gets word etc. etc.

so i'm gonna create a calendar and have it in place so everyone knows what's to come..

5X ( and me ;) ) came up with micro beats week this summer..and talked about it being a recurring week..

Halloween maybe Hugh? ..stuff like that.. maybe a spring break collab week or so?

the winner of those weeks can obviously choose the samples and further rules.. just not the traditional format..

oh, and i just got word from this weeks winner that implementing something with a 5 in your beat is allowed !

have at it!

pz Joa

ah, Friday the 1st of Dec. is the first day of Nelson Mandela collab week nr. 10 ! . just thought i'd get that in there ;)

Yo
What's good people?
Slow cook up for this one.
everything from the sound pack except for the vocal I used.
88 Bpm. used the word 5 and put a spiraling pitch effect that was -5.

Congratulations on the 5 years anniversary !

:salute: :vulcan: :peace:
Peace Mox

Hi there,

New to the forum, not new to making beats. Loved the sample pack and the idea of the use of single notes.

I've only used sounds from the pack and added a sh*tload of effects.

Have a great day!

Turns out the guiro sample is the best snare!

Also special thanks to AUsampler not playing my instruments when exporting/saving the beat, I had to grab the audio with audacity, lesson learned!
